About Us

Vaka Valo Association was established in 2014, at Taumako, Duff Islands.

So far we have enrolled 199 participants in Taumako including men, women, and children who are voluntarily willing to learn since 2012. The list of participants and members will be posted separately and this comprise of more than 60 percent of Taumako community who are the most knowledgeable builders and wavers in Taumako who are capable to teach the youths.

Students of Vaka Valo Association enjoy an Ancient Voyaging and indigenous knowledge training.

We are proud of our students and are excited to see the wonderful contributions they will make to our communities.

Our organisation was legally registered in Solomon Islands pursuant to section 6 of the Charitable Trusts Act ( Cap. 115) as Vaka Taumako Project Solomon Islands and Vaka Valo Association Trust Board ( Incorporated) on 3rd June 2014. Our organisation is based on Taumako, Duff Islands, Temotu Province, SE Solomon Islands of the Western Pacific and is an independent indigenous organisation without any affiliation to any other organisation. Our organisation is the only group on Taumako, Duff Islands who can still build authentic Tepuke and Tealolili voyaging canoes and sail them using ancient navigational techniques.

Our institution goal is to teach the youths of ancient navigation, culture and tradition of Taumako as practiced by ancestors to safeguard the indigenous knowledge to the next generation.
